Hemp is one of the strongest and longest natural fibers, four to five times stronger than cotton. When hemp fiber is woven into textiles, the result is an incredibly strong fabric. It doesn’t break down, tear, or become smelly. It gets softer with time while retaining its inherent durability and strength.
Our bags are ethically sourced from Nepal’s hilly regions where hemp plants grow naturally. The production of hemp fabric is environmentally sustainable as it requires less land and it absorbs more carbon than it produces.
After harvesting the plants, women of rural villages shred the leaves and soak the stems in water for up to 20 days. When they are tender the bark is separated from the rest of the plant, smoked above a fire and boiled in ash water. Hemp fibers are separated from the bark through a process called “retting”. These fibers are then spun together to produce a continuous thread that can be woven into a fabric. All the steps of making hemp fabric, from fiber processing, to spinning and weaving the yarn, are performed mainly by women.
